Qualcomm announced this morning its new mobile processor, Snapdragon 690, which brings 5G to phones at even more affordable prices. The San Diego-based chipset giant said six phone makers will be ready to ship smartphones with the new Snapdragon 690 5G in the second half of 2020, including HMD Global (Nokia), LG, Motorola, Sharp, and TCL. , among others.
“We want connectivity to be upgraded to 5G everywhere, and we want it to be affordable for everyone,” said Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm, in a recorded video message during a pre-launch press conference.
Designed for budget smartphones, the Snapdragon 690 5G includes a Kryo 560 CPU offering an improvement 20% performance compared to its predecessor. The chipset also features the company’s fifth-generation artificial intelligence engine that not only improves camera performance but also vastly improves gaming experiences. Using the company’s X51 5G modem, the Snapdragon 690 processor will bring 1GBs speed and “advanced” 5G coverage to the Series 6 platform for the first time.
For the first time, Qualcomm offers support for displays with a refresh rate of 120Hz on budget phones. Most high-end Android smartphones today have displays with a refresh rate of 90Hz or 120Hz.
Another great improvement is on the image side. Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 690 would allow phones to record 4K video with HDR, first on a budget phone. The company promises that the videos will have more colors and a greater dynamic range. Furthermore, the camera will also be able to capture a whopping 192MP still images.
Dipu John, senior director of product management at Qualcomm, said the Snapdragon 690 will make 5G devices more affordable. For John, the goal is to bring many cutting-edge features, such as HDR, 5G and 4K video recording to low-end devices with the new Snapdragon 690.
Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 690 is designed for global devices. “We put ourselves in the customer’s shoes and ask some fundamental questions, like who is the target market, how much will the device cost, and what are the key features, and then connect these features from the highest levels to the lowest levels, so that we can cover all segments and meet the needs of our consumers »
Although 5G launch has been slow in many parts of the world, that hasn’t stopped Qualcomm from launching a new 5G-enabled chipset.
This processor goes straight to attack the MediaTek Dimensity 820, where both chipsets including 5G for the mid / low range are expected to be crowned kings of connectivity. MediaTek Dimensity 820 we saw it arrive a few weeks ago on the Redmi 10X.
Snapdragon 690 5G vs Dimensional 820: Spec Sheet
To know which of the two processors is better, we will have to wait to see the Snapdragon 690 in action on a smartphone from Xiaomi or from another company. MediaTek Dimensity 820 can offer users slightly better performance (more powerful CPU and GPU) than Snapdragon 690 5G. However, this is pure speculation and we will need to have phones with these chipsets in our hands to know better the performance.
