The answer to the question “How important can your data be?” must always be answered with “As important as for companies and cybercriminals to want them.”
Never think that you have nothing to protect on your computer because your data is very valuable. Forget about the most trivial things, think about bank details or personal emails. If you want to protect them, in addition, to use a password manager and install some apps that can make your mobile more secure, you can use Neat URL, a Chrome extension to prevent data tracking in your browser.
Why use Neat URL, to avoid data tracking in your browser
It’s quite simple: privacy is a right that should not be truncated. We also have the fact that it is not at all pleasant that someone can cheat or steal us and keep the money from our work, just because we don’t think enough about our internet security.
As Internet users, we do not want our personal data to be used by third parties without our consent. This is something that usually happens when entering web pages through certain links that allow our data to be exposed.
The cyberattacks most used by criminals are usually Phishing and Keyloggers. They also tend to take advantage of security gaps that web page developers can leave in the code in order to infiltrate any of these pages.
According to Google, there are more than 1,900 million leaked data as a result of these failures, and much of this data, which was commercialized, is used to access Gmail accounts and other of its services.
They concluded that 7% of people who have been victims of this type of data theft ran the risk of cybercriminals accessing their Google accounts.
This is what happened to Yahoo in August 2013, when it suffered a massive hack, as it acknowledged late last year.
And while it is true that avoiding these attacks on the Internet requires a bit of common sense more than anything, it is never too much that we have extra security. That is why we will install the Neat URL extension for Chrome.
How to install the Neat URL extension
The installation of this extension is really simple, since the process is the same as for other extensions. Just go to the Chrome Web Store and click add to Chrome.
How to configure Neat URL?
When we have installed the extension, we can begin to configure it so that it fully fulfills its purpose. We will look for the extension icon and we will right click until we find the option “Preferences”.
In this section you will find all the details of the Neat URL extension
For example, you can change some parameters related to lock handling for the value found in the URL. This means that we can customize the existing parameters and eliminate or create new blocking conditions. This can be very useful when we want to filter the content of a specific domain.
In this image we can see the parts of the URL that are blocked by default to prevent the function of these parts from being activated and can collect data.
The extension comes by default with different parameters to avoid, but we can add our own or modify the existing ones.
We can add any value that we want to block. You just have to scroll down and fill in the different options we have.
In the Advanced section, we can add our own domains to the extension’s blacklist manually. Any website that we have any suspicions can go to this blacklist.
If you want to stop using the extension At some point, just click on the extension icon and it will automatically stop working.
If what you want is to uninstall the extension permanently, we can remove it from the browser at any time, we just right-click on the extension icon and click to remove or uninstall.
The collection of data by many prestigious companies such as Google, Amazon or Facebook is a common practice. The problem arises when some websites unscrupulously collect this data without the consent of users.
That is why we must become aware of what our network security implies and be clear that, while we browse the Internet, someone is going to want to steal something from us.
